Marine Corps' Top Officer Speaks at Natl. Press Club

Marine Corps Commandant General James Amos delivered remarks at the National Press Club on the role of the Marines as America's crisis-response force.

According to the NPC's website, "He recently embarked on a worldwide tour to warn Marines to clean up their act after a series of embarrassing incidents pointed to a breakdown in the storied discipline of the Corps."

The U.S. General overseeing operations in the Southwest of Afghanistan says he’s had no cooperation from the Pakistani army in securing its border with Afghanistan. Maj. Gen. John Toolan is in the U.S. for ten days, and spoke Monday at the Atlantic Council in Washington, DC. The U.S. will continue to defend the Afghan military for at least ten years after the country formally takes control of its security, according to an agreement signed Sunday.

The moderator was author and scholar Michael O’Hanlon, who recently traveled to Afghanistan.

General James Jones, who served as President Obama’s National Security Advisor from 2009 to 2010 told reporters that it’s “tragic” that no one is willing to take first step in the Middle East peace process. He also said the U.S. should consider a Marshall Plan for Egypt and spoke about the state of U.S.-Pakistan relations since the death of Osama bin Laden.  He made these remarks during a speech on Middle East policy at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. Gen. Jones was introduced by National Press Club President Mark Hamrick.
