House Immigration Subcmte. Examines E-Verify Program

Washington, DC
Wednesday, February 27, 2013

The House Immigration and Border Security Subcommittee held a hearing on E-Verify, an Internet-based system that tracks the legal status of potential employees.

E-Verify compares the social security numbers of new employees against records maintained by the Social Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

Chair Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) has tied the use of E-Verify with proposed legislation to reform the nation's immigration system. Pointing to weaknesses in the 1986 immigration bill, Chair Gowdy states that "a functioning employment verification system is a condition precedent for future reform efforts.”
