House Education Cmte. Looks at School Safety

The House Education and the Workforce Committee holds a hearing on school safety and security in light of the recent school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary.

Witnesses discussed faculty and student training practices, local school security needs, crisis reaction protocol and post-incident recovery services.

The committee heard from a former principal at a Kentucky school where three students were killed in 1997.  Witnesses also included a representative from the National Association of School Resource Officers, which trains armed guards at schools.

Bill Bond, school safety specialist at the National Association of Secondary School Principals; Mo Canady, executive director of the National Association of School Resources Officers; Brett Bontrager, senior vice president and group executive of Stanley Black and Decker; Frederick Ellis, director of the Office of Safety and Security for Fairfax County Public School in Virginia; Vincent Pompei, school counselor at Val Verde Unified School District in San Diego; and David Osher, vice president of the American Institutes for Research also testified..

Rep. John Kline (R-Minn.) chaired the hearing.
