Newly-confirmed Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel holds a news conference on the Department's sequestration plans, saying that the uncertainty it causes "puts at risk the ability to successfully fulfill all our missions."
He said he would like to see more flexibility in how the budget cuts are implemented. He noted that the Department of Defense would have to furlough civilian employees, and that the department has already been spending at slower rates since January in preparation for the cuts.
He noted that the Air Force would have to cut flying hours and that other training programs would also be cut back, and that those factors and others may eventually affect force readiness.
Deputy Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter also took questions from the press at this event.
