During the Civil War, over 180,000 members of the Union Army were African American. Of these men, 13 served as surgeons. Specialist Jill Newmark of the National Library of Medicine talks about these surgeons, and specifically focuses on the attempts of one surgeon to acquire a pension after his Civil War service.
