Prior to the start of the Civil War, Washington was deeply focused on the issues of secession and slavery. President Lincoln fought to preserve and expand freedom while staying within the context of the rule of law. The U.S. Capitol Historical Society presented a conference recently about the looming war’s impact in the nation’s capitol.
